A deadly shooting in Montreal’s Côte-des-Neiges neighbourhood Monday morning claimed the lives of a Service de Police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) officer, a local Jewish civilian, and the suspect. A second female officer was seriously injured but is now in stable condition.
The incident erupted around 11:30–11:35 a.m. near Décarie Boulevard, Trans Island, and De Courtrai Avenues. Police responded to reports of an armed man in camouflage firing shots, including from a hotel window and in a busy commercial-residential area that includes Jewish community sites such as a Chabad House and kosher businesses.
Victims
One male SPVM officer was killed in the line of duty — the first such death for the Montreal police force in 24 years. His name has not yet been released, pending family notification.
Michael Moshe Mizrahi, a member of Montreal’s Jewish community, was killed. It remains unclear whether he was shot by the suspect or during police crossfire.
A female SPVM officer was critically injured but is reported stable.
The suspect, a male armed with a long gun (possibly an SKS-style rifle) and wearing camouflage, was neutralized (killed) by police.
SPVM Chief Fady Dagher described the event as a “nightmare” and paid tribute to the fallen officer as a “great, great, great police officer.” He confirmed it involved a lone suspect with no ongoing threat to the public.
Investigation and MotiveA large-scale police response followed, including heavily armed officers and a shelter-in-place order that was later lifted. The motive remains unknown. Police are examining whether the suspect left a manifesto or specifically targeted the Jewish community. The Quebec police watchdog (BEI) will investigate the shootings, including the circumstances of the civilian’s death.
